Metaphysics and Spirituality
If you are reading this blog it is likely heard these terms before, but are you sometimes confused about what they truly mean?
These words are often misunderstood, interchanged, or misused. In our spiritual coaching courses, we systematically break these down into detail, their functionality, and why they are important. In this article, we give an overview of what the main differences are and how you can use them in harmony.
Both terms come from an innate desire to want to find an answer to the most sacred questions of the soul.
A metaphysical question asks us to explore beyond our physical world. We might wonder, “What is the meaning of life?” Or, “How did I come into being?” These types of questions touch upon the deepest parts of ourselves. They require us to look within ourselves and find out who we are. In contrast, a spiritual question usually involves looking outward and asking about the nature of things. For example, “Does God exist?” “Where did my soul go?” “Why am I here?” These sorts of questions focus on the external world around us.
Metaphysics is philosophical
The word “metaphysics” comes from the Greek words meta (μετά) and physis (φύσιν). Meta means “after”, while physis means “nature”. So, metaphysics is literally “the science of what exists beyond nature.”
Metaphysics refers to the scientific study of things that exist beyond space and time. For example, we know that there are atoms, molecules, cells, organs, organisms, societies, etc., but there are things that exist outside of time and outside of space like anti-matter and dark matter. As particles become less dense (physical) matter begins to behave to the accepted laws of physic. Einstein is famous for describing this as “spooky action at a distance”
“metaphysical” refers to something that goes beyond the physical world. In everyday language, we use the word “metaphysical” to refer to things like love, happiness, justice, freedom, God, etc. However, these concepts don’t exist in the physical world. We cannot see them, touch them, smell them, taste them, hear them, or measure them. Therefore, they are not “physical things”.
Spirituality is Experiential
Spiritualism is an approach to living that emphasizes personal development through experience. It focuses on self-knowledge, self-improvement, and self-transformation.
The word “spiritual” derives from the Latin spiritus, meaning breath or wind. People who practice spiritualism believe that we are each unique beings with our spirits. We are born into physical bodies, but ultimately, we exist beyond those boundaries. Our spirits continue to live after death.
In addition to helping people understand their souls and the afterlife, spiritual coaches, shamans, etc., often guide others and tap into realms usually beyond what science can measure currently.
Can you combine spirituality and metaphysical?
Yes, you can combine both to understand the nature of reality. It is about exploring what exists outside our five senses and how we perceive things. This includes everything from the quantum level to the cosmic level. It is about looking at things from different perspectives.
There is a growing interest in spirituality and the philosophy behind it because people want to understand life better. They want to know why there is suffering and why some people live longer while others die younger. People want to know what happens after death.
People are becoming interested in spirituality because they realize that there is more to life than just making money. They want to find meaning in life and purpose. The world needs to come together and work towards peace and harmony. If everyone could learn to respect each other, the planet would become a much happier place.
We are all made up of energy. And energy cannot be destroyed. So even though we are born into bodies, we do not die. Our souls go somewhere else. When you accept that you are part of the whole, you start seeing yourself differently. You begin to appreciate life and love.
